Creek Run Environmental Engineering announced at the Montpelier Common Council’s Monday meeting plans to move a portion of its operation to the city.
Creek Run will move its drafting and trust fund operations from rural Harrison Township to the site of the old First Financial Bank building at 127 W. Huntington St.
“This will be a really nice addition to the commercial district of Montpelier,” said Rob Cleveland, executive director of the Blackford County Economic Development Corporation. He emphasized the new the location on S.R. 18 would “increase visibility for the corporation.”
Cleveland brought two items of business before the council. The first item involved declaring the property an Economic Revitalization Area (ERA).
The second item involved confirming a tax abatement for the property. This is an unusual tax abatement, Cleveland explained. Most abatements are for new facilities and thus qualify for 10-year abatements. In this case, however, the Montpelier building is an existing structure but has been vacant for several years. It qualifies, therefore, for only a two-year abatement.
There has been a similar abatement elsewhere in Indiana this year. Both items were passed by the council with unanimous approval.
Creek Run will receive a 100 percent abatement for its first year and a 50 percent abatement in the second year.
According the Jason Lenz, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Creek Run, the business will hire new employees and move a staff of five to the building in Montpelier. Most of the staff includes field geologists and biologists, environmental scientists and technicians. The new staff members will be moving to this area, Lenz said.
As Mayor Jim McPherson congratulated Lenz on the expansion, he joked, “It’s nice to know that Hamilton County’s brain drain is our brain gain.”
